Subject
Sculpture of the ancient altar of the nativity in the Basilica Liberiane
Description
More polite yet, much more beautifully decorated, though perhaps by only one hand, is this bas-relief placed in comparison with the others that we examined in the previous table. It is an exquisite and careful work so that it is the a delight to see it (dovesi?) and certainly regarded as a good century of art, mostly for the figure of the Virgin, which has over the tunic a cloak, that goes around with beautiful division of folds, and growing grace, majesty, and devotion to the whole figure that has its hands clasped over its chest and the face full of devout meditation.
Two recesses can be seen on either side of the Virgin close to a nice frame, and in which there are two arches topped by beautiful ornaments and kept in the hall by two angels, which are positioned towards the Virgin and they hold their hands clasped to their chests in adoration.
The upper part of the bas-relief ends as an arched tympanum shot with rosettes and broad beans at the ends, and rests with these above the capitals of two graceful pillars flanking the entire work. In this compartment of the eardrum, under which there is no frame at all, are carved of beautiful ornaments, which encloses between them a figure of Christ who raised his right hand to bless the upper and his left hand resting on an open book, almost to show people the evangelical precepts which left them in his glorious missionary on Earth.
