<text>	The interior of the church of Santa Maria del Popolo changed shape at the time of Bernini, who was an architect invited to direct its work. He among many beautiful things that (vi operò) knew not to deserve universal approval in substituting another work, conducted over his drawings, one that we imprinted in this table, or that for many years was a noble ornament of the high altar. The altar drawn by Bernini. One is a work worthy of being remembered amongst the wonders of the most luminous centuries of Italian art, the other suffers much from the principle of baroque that already began and hinting at wanting to occupy much of the field in the artistic realm.
Certainly the author of this stupendous work was Andrea Bernini, of which we will speak of in Table 74 (LXXIV), speaking of the monument that he raised in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, and who knows how many other exquisite works he was he author among the many artistic treasures left to us by our glorious fathers.
The Saints Peter, Paul, Augustine, and Jerome occupy the four niches of the pillars. In the middle is a large niche of a fresco painting depicting the Madonna with the Child in her arms. This painting was found in recent excavations on Mount Pincio in the year 1810 and is said to be the work of Giotto, but his voice was belied by analyses by intellectuals who believed that it was created by a hand entirely different from that of the famous Florentine.

<text>More polite yet, much more beautifully decorated, though perhaps by only one hand, is this bas-relief placed in comparison with the others that we examined in the previous table. It is an exquisite and careful work so that it is the a delight to see it (dovesi?) and certainly regarded as a good century of art, mostly for the figure of the Virgin, which has over the tunic a cloak, that goes around with beautiful division of folds, and growing grace, majesty, and devotion to the whole figure that has its hands clasped over its chest and the face full of devout meditation.
Two recesses can be seen on either side of the Virgin close to a nice frame, and in which there are two arches topped by beautiful ornaments and kept in the hall by two angels, which are positioned towards the Virgin and they hold their hands clasped to their chests in adoration.
The upper part of the bas-relief ends as an arched tympanum shot with rosettes and broad beans at the ends, and rests with these above the capitals of two graceful pillars flanking the entire work. In this compartment of the eardrum, under which there is no frame at all, are carved of beautiful ornaments, which encloses between them a figure of Christ who raised his right hand to bless the upper and his left hand resting on an open book, almost to show people the evangelical precepts which left them in his glorious missionary on Earth. </text>

<text>This sculpture along with the others that we will examine in the following table were once inside the interior of the church of S. Maria Maggiore, until they were removed with many other works by the order of Pope Benedict XIV which he restored so that the church could be rebuilt. We cannot say which was the foundation of their original destination, but it is certain that they had to be destined to decorate some altar and perhaps the same one was built by the cardinal of Estouteville.
This bas-relief was composed of two composite pillars and covered with beautiful ornaments, closed within these two niches separated by a pillar on which rest the arches of the niches forming shells. In the first of these, to the right of the beholder, may be seen the effigy of St. Abbot Bernard of Clairvaux, his face full of devout meditation. He has a book in his left hand, perhaps to mention the works written by this learned and holy man, and with his right hand holding a chain, to which is tied a filthy animal depicting the devil, which was won by the holy abbot and afflicted. The other niche is occupied by S. Jerome, as can be seen clearly from the lion, which is the animal always placed at the side of this saint, and the cardinal's hat owed to him because he was a priest of the Roman Church, and therefore decorated with the title of cardinal. He is dressed in a cardinal’s cloak that hangs from the shoulders broad with rich folds, and has a book in his hands in the act of opening it and read it.
The whole relief is surmounted by a lunette, in whose center is carved the figure of the Redeemer, and around it runs a carved frame, which is reminiscent of what rests on the pillars.

<text>This a gift made by William Periera to the church of S. Maria del Popolo in 1447, and the work is really commendable for the beauty of its decorations and for the kindness of its design. One day it will have been in the church since the noble ornament of the altar, but having afterwards to give way to other works, he sought to place it among many other works in that hallway for which you enter in the sacristy.
It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as seen from the inscription carved into the base and flanked by the arms of the donor. From this base there are four pillars, which support a cornice carved in the three parts that make it up. Above this cornice and corresponding to the width of two pillars median with their whole thickness is a bezel that encompasses head of the Savior. The three-pillar and open niches contain three figures standing: the middle one is the effigy of the Virgin Mary, who has the right niche in the shape of an S. Augustine, Bishop and left that of S. Catherine. The beauty of the ornaments, which are the pillars of the simplicity of the work, and the manner in which it dealt with the large party of folds, which are made from 'other mantles that are dressed in the three figures, the fans believe this to what fine, and press to be a model for those who are dedicated to the beautiful art is ornamental.
The same William Pereira makes a gift of another beautiful altar (istile) not conformed to this the church of S. Paul, and we will give you more than before.</text>

<text>In the old church of San Sabina, built according to some in 425 under Pope Celestine in that place where the saint has his father’s house, but not consecrated shortly after the pontificate of Sisto III., exists this monument. It is located in the chapel of S. Rosario, made to manufacture at the expense of Cardinal Valentino d’Ausia del Poggio buried here.
This distinguished cardinal was born in Zativa in the kingdom of Valencia, and it became clear for many doctrines and for the sanctity of matters. Acting as advisor to the King of Aragon, he went as ambassador of several principles. Sixtus IV declared him the governor of Rome and on May 17, 1473 made him cardinal. For he was invited as ambassador to Fredrick III and the kings of Hungary, Bohemia, and Poland to excite them in taking up arms against the Turks. I was received on behalf of Pope Eleonora of Aragon that was going to marry the Duke of Ferrara. In 1476, he was the administrator of Capaccio, archbishop of Monreale, and administrator of Zaragoza. He attended decorously the diet of Frankfort. (Abbellì) and factories grew in his titular church of S. Sabina. He was largely protected by his scholars and writers with their own fortunes, and was so liberal to the poor by naming his heirs in his will. Man truly esteemed and highly commendable, as long as the virtues of the heart, if nothing else except for voice, will follow to have the first place among the people.
The friends that were interpreters of his last will, as gathered from the epigraph, made him raise this monument, a work remarkable for agreement with the architecture, for the elegance of ornaments and for goodness of sculpture. The base has the inscription and the weapons of the diseased: the pillars of the four cardinal virtues to the left, justice and fortitude, and in front, prudence and temperance. </text>
