Above this begins an arch covered in carvings, and on it, the venerated images of Our Lady with her Divine Child in her arms, and two winged figures kneeling in a fine act of prayer can be seen. The fresco painting has a wonderful exquisiteness, and it is lamentable that it has been so battered by time. On top of the arch lies the salvific cross. Enclosed between the two aforementioned pillars is an arch, inside of which the mortal remains of the Christian saint are kept, resting peacefully, which was a tradition that dominated the fifteenth century. There is an urn decorated with festoons, and above this. He was honored for his above average prowess in handling public affairs in the forum with the sincerity of one who truly loved his country. CANTACUZENO E LEONARDO MANSUETI In the Santa Maria sopra Minerva Church Description An account of the resource TABLE LXXXIII The church of Saint Maria above Minerva was erected over the ruins of the temple of a Goddess, who people offered many spoils in thanksgiving for the victories against enemies of Rome. This church has always been under the protection of the popes, and of great veneration of the Romans; and though it is always kept adorned, it was not long ago that the door to that degree of splendor that befits the house of God was opened by the Reverends PP. Dominicans were allocated in the annexed convent. The special devotion with which he gave the constant concern to the floor and the walls so they were crowded with sepulchral monuments can be seen here, and we have listed them here, as we took them from that magnificent temple. The first of which much adorned with foliage and flowers and was named after Gioacchino Torriani, from the noble city, Venice; who, after he had the religious order of the preachers, was appointed General for his great goodness and scholarliness. He knew several languages and divine sciences were among the first intellects of his time. The second monument consists of an arch supported by pillars adorned with very elegant pedestals, and a shrine arises form them, which consists of a base, fluted pilasters, and entablatures. On the pillar, there are inscriptions which remind us of the three Christians, of whom <the monument> contains the mortal remains: Caterina Cantacuseno Floridi, a noble Cypriot with many beautiful qualities that can be equated to the old matrons; of Isabella Belli, the only daughter, a delight to her relatives; and of Ettore Legles of Cyprus, this monument is erected to him and those above mentioned. In the third monument, with architecture and ornate decorations almost equal to the first, awaits the resurrection of Leonardo Mansueti from Perugia, the most knowledgeable theologian, who had Christian integrity. He was a religious preacher and, under Paul II, he was the master of the Sacred Apostolic Palaces, and was universally valued. Maria sopra Minerva Subject The topic of the resource TABLE LXXXIV SEPULCHRAL TOMB OF AGAPITO RUSTICO In the Santa Maria sopra Minerva Church Description An account of the resource TABLE LXXXIV This monument that is rich in the simplicity of its lines, rests on three shelves decorated with acanthus leaves, and is one of the best things that can be seen in the Church of Saint Maria above Minerva. The shape is unlike its style, which is typically firmly rooted in the century in which it was constructed. Though it has a simple base, it is cleverly created, and at either end, it has a coat of arm of the deceased, and has two pillars on it, covered with ornaments and topped with two lovely capital composites. Above this lies a very vague and rich entablature, on top of which is also a beautifully decorated pediment. The interpillar is placed on the arch that encloses the ashes of the man who was laid to rest there, and depicts a statue of the actual headdress, on top of which is the episcopal statue. This recumbent statue and work of expert sculpting, which shows a marvelous portrait of charity and kindness that, should depict the sacred mystery that such an important priest maintains. In addition, the garments show a cyclical style, and portray all of the uplifting majesty and devotion. And a devout and majestic Christian with the poise of Agapito Rustico, was buried here; because the Shepard of souls was always gracious and sweet in his advising that in return for those who remain with the integrity of Catholic morals should be a mirror to the world. He was a bishop of Camerino, and due to the magnificence of his church, is still remembered as a beloved pastor whose biographers recorded the remarkable virtue that surrounded his truly Christian spirit. And they know that in addition to his aforementioned moral excellence, he had cultivated the spirit, by knowing much about divinity, and being skillful in the Latin language that was orally known throughout Italy. On the bare space that can be seen between the interpillar of this tomb, and in the tympanum, perhaps there will one day be someone who can interpret these vague fresco paintings, or what is shown the bas-reliefs means, but in the same location, most of the monuments to goddesses that existed in the 15th century, as well as others, were damaged, decomposed and mutilated. Pietro of Montorio, and which Vasari says – cannot proportion, order, and diversity be imagined, and grace kinder be better imagined – this altar is dedicated to the Prince of the Apostles, of which Bramante himself was the creator. It consists of a table upon which stands a base, from two pillars stand out which encloses a seated statue of the first Vicar of Christ on Earth, who was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, which is depicted by the artist on the right. In front of the table, there are three panes of which the two side arms refer to those who order the fabrication of this altar, the middle one containing the image of fish in the waves of the sea, which was important to the life of the sovereign apostle to whom this monument was dedicated. The bas-relief that adorns the aforementioned base recalls the terrible death administered to Peter by the impious Pagans. It is similar to the composition of the majority of monuments created in this period of time, to clarify, and it is particularly remarkable for the simplicity and beauty of its carvings. In the basement there is the epigraph of the deceased and his coat of arms on the sides, consisting of a resurgent and prancing deer, which symbolizes caution. Two pillars exquisitely decorated with foliage on a capitellum and ending with the composite style support an entablature frieze in which deer being chased by hounds with leashes flying from around their necks can be seen. On the interpillar is an urn, on top of which is a statue depicting the image of those who have been laid to rest there. Above is the image of the Mother of angels, taking the divine cherub to the breast, and on the sides two winged spirits can be seen supporting the frame where the above mentioned effigy is placed, and at the bottom, there is a hanging ending with a rich fringe indented with large flakes between each dent; decorations are carried out in a nice fresco, while the image of the Virgin Mary is carved in marble, as is the rest of the monument. The person for which this important tomb was erected is Agostino Maffei, the Roman court officer who received a great deal of praise. In addition, he was a man who loved literature and the fine arts, though the most important thing was that he was a very pious and virtuous Christian. This monument was erected to the Cardinal Astorgio Agnese of Galeotto and his relatives, who wished to be buried beside him. An urn is lying on top of the figure of the illustrious Cardinal, but in the top frame, both are depicted with their eyes and faces turned to the Virgin Mary, who has her Divine Son in her arms. Perhaps they wished to indicate that they were not taking the glory of the blessed mother for granted, or that they had a special devotion to the Mother of God. Whatever the reason may be, it is certain that this is a very beautiful painting, and that the paintbrush of the noble Federico Zuccari showed her with admirable grace and intelligence. Astorgio was a man of great prudence and actions, which were good qualities that he used to procure a doctrine to be used in many nunciatures, government of Marca, and the Dukes of Spoleto, of Bologna, and of the provincial shareholders. He was Bishop of Mileto, Ravello, Melfi, and Ancona; after that he was the Archbishop of Benevento, Vice-Chancellor of the S.R.C, and Cardinal for Niccolo V in 1488. It was his ardent zeal in advocating the sound and true doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, and distinguished himself mainly by his heated arguments against the crazy breed of “Cretici” appointed Fraticelli. He died in Rome in 1451, and a monument was erected for him in the walkway of the Saint Maria on top of Minerva Church, in which four statues symbolize four of the main virtues of the deceased. Apostles could not stop looking at this great monument which was created, along with those that were erected during the sixteenth century. At first glance, it is clearly perceived to be intended to perpetuate the memory of some unknown captain, so there are weapons, eagles, trophies, and laurels rather than ornaments. The artist truly made the monument too lavish, so that the eye cannot focus on any particular part, especially at the middle, where there is a recumbent statue of the deceased, and minute details are indented all over. But we will leave such investigations to the duty of others, who we believe will have the appropriate care. I will continue, as I have in the other tables, with the summary description. But first, you will have to consider what was said above, for today you cannot see this beautiful work in the interior of the church, but rather, it is in the cloister. And, what is worse is that it is in such bad conditions that you can hardly see it. With great care, we have been able to rummage through the corners of the cloister, and eventually reassemble everything, finding much of the monument scattered in small remnant that are easy for the eye to miss. First, continuing from the descriptions, and we will start at the base, where signs discussing the noble family who is responsible for the admission of this monument, and will next move up the stacked pillars, that are adorned with all types of military decorations and rich entablatures. Under this is a semicircle covered with simple lines that help the venerated image of Our Lady stand, supported in the air by angels. In the center, resting on a kind of case, is the statue of the departed with a hand on a sword, and his right arm resting. And with what seems to be references to his hard earned military pursuits, this monument is made as a reminder of the perils of war. The urn is supported by two eagles with outstretched wings, each snatching a tortoise in her claws, alluding to the victories of the noble and courageous warrior that is resting here. He was called Lucio Mancini, and was Roman. He felt very naturally inclined to weapons, and became very useful to the Republic of St. Mark, the republic for which he always fought bravely for, reaping praise and fortunes with every conquest. He was considered to be a great captain, who was very honored and envied by all, and was taken from life far too young, filling those who knew him with inconsolable grief and sorrow. And this is why his great love built this tomb for him, so that he would have a place to remain when he took his final trip, since he had hope his pious soul would be delivered to his spouse in heaven, where the good can find peace. Pietro Montorio Subject The topic of the resource TABLE LXXXIX SEPULCHRAL TOMB OF GIULIANO DA VOLTERRA In the Church of Saint Pietro Montorio Description An account of the resource TAVOLA LXXXIX In the simple yet elegant church of Saint Pietro at Montorio, which was rebuilt based on the designs of Baccio Pintelli, exists this beautiful work of sixteenth century art. It contains the remains of Giuliano of Volterra, of the religious order of Minori, who was the bishop of Ragusi, known for his reputation, studies and virtue. He was called to be a part of a special assemblage of the most brilliant philosophers and theologians in Rome of that time by Cardinal Bessarione, where he practiced the divine sciences. There was also his position in the Apostolic Penitentiary, which he held with passion and zeal until he was taken by God during his 73rd year. Vegerius of Savona, the Cardinal of Senigallia, knew of his burden and erected this monument in his wonderful memory. It was created with the most careful artistic proportions, though it is adorned with unimaginably indistinctive carvings. The carvings are used sparingly at the bottom of the work, and then they increase, and fully cover the stands that lift it. So, at the base, there are commendably beautiful lines, a good proportion of moldings, and a lining of frivolous ornaments. The arms of the dome and its frame are beside it, and the frame is adorned with a lovely ovulo. They are both richly carved and enclose an arch at the middle. The pillars that support the monument faintly show the carving of a braid. In the center of the monument is the urn, which rests on a base and is supported by two lions’ paws, and in the space in between the legs, one can faintly see the emblems exercised by the sacred ministry with regard to the deceased. The lunettes formed by the arch are also rich in ornamentation, and fittingly contain carvings of all three members of the entablature.
